Although purple martins in the eastern United States mainly rely on man-made nesting sites, they can be selective about the houses they choose. Constructing appropriate martin houses not only draws these birds but also provides residents with protection from inclement weather and predators.

For the best results, it's recommended to install martin houses in a spacious, open area at a distance of at least 40 ft. from any trees or buildings. Martins typically prefer easy access to the houses from all angles and enjoy perching sites such as utility wires near the nest box but not attached to it.
